Development of High-Performance Rare-Earth-Free Permanent Magnet Machines for Electric Vehicles

The global transition to sustainable transportation necessitates advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology, with high-performance and sustainable electric machines at the forefront. Currently, rare-earth permanent magnet machines dominate the EV market due to their high magnetic energy density. However, these magnets pose significant environmental impacts during production and are subject to high and volatile prices. This research project will innovate by exploring alternative magnetic materials without rare-earth elements, combined with advanced materials and engineering techniques applied in electric machines. By developing high-performance and cost-effective rare-earth-free permanent magnet machines, this work can help accelerate the transition to more sustainable transportation.
