Role Summary

The Product Safety Engineer will provide key technical support for product safety as part of the quality department at Electrify America. The role will report to the Manager, EVSE Conformance and will provide technical expertise on product safety including technical failure analysis, incident investigation, design for safety, DFMEA, and conformance to safety standards. The candidate will be an experienced professional with technical acumen related to power electronics. Ideal candidate is one who is highly motivated to participate in a rapidly emerging and industry and will have experience working in an safety role in high-tech related industry where the pace of innovation requires constant problem-solving to ensure a safe and reliable performance of technical assets.

Responsibilities of the position will include leading product safety investigations related to documented safety events, working closely with the EHS, field service, and engineering teams. Individual will be responsible to provide on-site inspection of equipment for level 1 safety events as required, in some cases traveling to location with short notice. Candidate will participate in external lab analysis and in some cases provide in person witness testing oversight or other coordination of external lab activity. Individual will also oversee product conformance testing related to safety at the Electrify America Technology Campus, defining overall test plans working with the EVSE test team and interpreting results. During new product introduction this individual will engage in design reviews of hardware and software working with our quality and technology teams to ensure all safety requirements are met in products and service delivery. They will support EHS team on all requirements related to incident reporting and documentation. Candidate will have the ability to evaluate mechanical, electrical, and communications systems operational risk profiles by leveraging industry experience to determine appropriate solutions and drive implementation. Product Safety engineer will interface at times with external partners and automotive OEMs on key safety topics as required.

Role Responsibilities

Safety Technical Failure Analysis - 40%

Provide technical analysis of hardware and log files for all level 1 safety events and select level 2 events as aligned with management.

Create a technical safety report that is provided to EHS and other internal teams as required.

Oversee safety-related improvements and campaigns as required working with service and network operations.

Safety Testing and Conformance - 30%

Define and oversee product safety testing to ensure compliance to all relevant safety standards and regulations

Interpret test results and coordinate with engineering and vendors to drive mitigations

Design for Safety Best Practices - 15%

Review safety features and implementations on current and future products

Identify safety requirements as required working with engineering and hardware manufacturers and manage through implementation.

Management Presentations - 10%

Present monthly safety KPI updates to management and provide as input into monthly supplier score cards.

Present key safety topics in calls with equipment manufacturers and drive improvement actions as required.

Product Safety Training - 5%

Develop content and perform product safety training for internal teams.

Years Of Relevant Experience

At least 5 years of relevant experience

Education (Required)

Bachelor's Degree in a Technical Discipline such as engineering or applied sciences

Education (Desired)

Advanced Degree

NFPA 70E certification

Skills

Excellent attention to detail and ability to track, follow-up and communicate milestones

Proven abilities to manage vendors and vendor contracts

Strong and proven self-management abilities and ability to achieve objectives

Excellent verbal and writing skills including understanding complex issues and properly communicate issues to other stakeholders written

Excellent computer proficiency - skilled in the use of office, statistical analysis, and project management software

Strong problem solving and process improvement capabilities

Demonstrated record of precision & integrity in past work assignments

Specialized Skills (Required)

Technical experience in service, manufacturing, or similar industry

Significant experience creating reports and presentations summarizing electrical and mechanical incidents

Standard and compliance knowledge of UL2202, UL2231, UL2594, SAE 1772 and IEC 61851 / 62196

Ability to interpret technical log files and provide subject matter expertise

Excellent technical writing capabilities with ability to author scientific lab grade assessments of complex failures

Ability to read and interpret single line drawings, mechanical CAD drawings, technical specifications, and other technical documents.

Specialized Skills (Desired)

High-tech industry experience
