About the Role

We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to take technical ownership of the mechanical design function for innovative electric drive development projects. These systems typically include a traction battery-powered electric machine and controller, serving applications such as motorcycles, scooters, and outdoor power equipment.

You will lead the mechanical engineering team, set and maintain high technical standards, and ensure successful delivery from concept through to high-volume production — balancing performance, cost, and reliability targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design and assembly process for electric drive systems.
  • Plan, coordinate, and uphold mechanical engineering standards, systems, and documentation.
  • Manage the transition from prototype to high-volume manufacture, working with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
  • Support prototype builds, tooling, and test rig development to validate new technologies.
  • Ensure consistent, repeatable product development on time and to budget.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop the mechanical engineering team to deliver against KPIs.
  • Drive continuous improvement, Lean techniques, and best practice engineering processes.
  • Engage with customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies as needed.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Chartered Engineer preferred).
  • Proven leadership in high-volume, low-cost mechanical product design for harsh environments (e.g. automotive, agricultural, outdoor power equipment, consumer products).
  • Experience with green technologies, motors, and electrical systems.
  • Expertise in Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Production Engineering principles.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD; familiarity with drawing standards.
  • Experience with thermal/structural simulation tools, design validation, and NPI processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills with a process-driven mindset.
  • Ability to manage complex projects, influence stakeholders, and adapt to fast-changing priorities.
